The report aims to provide insights into the ratio of non-IT to IT employees, the centralization of IT departments and the distribution of IT FTEs across various departments.

Key findings include:

  • The ratio of non-IT to IT employees decreased from 40:1 to 38:1 between 2019 and 2022, potentially due to factors like increased contract labor, decreased efficiency and IT spending more time with non-IT staff for issue resolution and training.
  • Around 92% of clients have centralized IT departments, driven by the adoption of software platforms like Epic and the aim to enhance efficiency and subject matter expertise.
  • Revenue Cycle, Facilities, Admin and Clinical Labs departments, outside of IT, have the highest concentration of IT FTEs due to specialized testing software in clinical labs and the need for additional IT support in departments like revenue cycle after implementing platforms like Epic.
